my friend's pet died when it got too thin. She didn't feed it.

There's two options: start new pet (via egg button) or continue (with life seed button)
pets usually leave letters a day or two after maturation and leaves hearts (determined by how well you took care of it)

bread + tomato + fly = pizza 58%

bread + tomato + soap/iron ingot/fries = 62%
bread + fish stick + fries =63%

quatrz + rock + water = soap 63%

or neglect it
just leave it alone for around 2-6 hours

make the happy meter full before it poos

bread + rock + water has a higher success rate

don't take care of it and you'll get a nello.
i.e. don't make it happy (low or no dots in the happy meter), don't make it full (little to no dots for the hunger meter), make it thin or fat (can check in the meter button --> magnifying glass)
