I got all three stars without using any extras. It's basically just luck. After you get the first rainbow mint bomb I made another one with the rainbow one in the middle, that then cleared out the whole board (including the orange sugar sticks). After that I just used a few moves to get the 40 sticks, then had 23 moves left and that was enough to get 3 stars.
