There is no limit, you stop receiving a bulk of rewards after 100, you can go to 200 for a small amount of extra gold but its not quite worth it. The farthest I've seen someone go is 700ish, not worth it though.

Awakening justs increases stats. On the equip menu theres a button that says "Embed" click on that and you can add jewels to equips. there are three gems Ruby, sapphire, and emerald. Since gems just increase the character in general it doesn't matter what equip has what gems
