As Jack’s plane came to a juddering stop on Orchid Island, I waved back to Mrs. Talbot, who had come out to greet me. She still had her oven mitts on, and a streak of flour across her cheek.
“Happy Christmas Eve, Juney,” Jack said, helping me down to the ground. I wondered if I should ask him to stay? I knew he wasn’t close with his family, but things between us had been a little strange recently. Were we friends, or something more?
[Mrs. Talbot appears] “Jack, thank you for delivering her safely again.”
Jack replied, “No problem. I’d better leave you to your celebrations, then.”
“Jack, what are your Christmas plans?” Mrs. Talbot asked.
Jack shrugged. “I was just going to see where the wind took me.”
Mrs. Talbot looked aghast. “That’s nonsense! Stay here, I insist.”
“Oh, no, I wouldn’t wan-“
“It’s settled,” Mrs. Talbot said, nodding to herself. “And I have just enough gingerbread left.”
“For?” Jack asked.
