I am on level 60 and have a total of 10 islands if you include the Giving Tree. The only way you can unlock islands is to collect map pieces from Carl when he arrives to your docks, (brown boat looks like a fishing troller). Takes a long time but when I knew I had islands left to unlock I always prioritized him to the top of the list so I could get as many map pieces as possible. Some of these are sold in the Market Place. If you see them snatch them up quickly. I sell them regularly. Then go to Carl's Cabin and if you have enough you can unlock another island but visit him often so you can get rid of small map pieces to trade for bigger ones. This has the advantage of taking up less space in your storage. Tip: 'Friend' folks in World Market that are at level 50 or higher. You can tell what level they're at by visiting their islands. This has a couple of advantages. First, since you are friends with them, you will often see them regularly in the World Market where you otherwise might not. Folks who are at this level have more mills and resources so the items they trade are VERY valuable to you. Also, since they've already unlocked all the islands they have map pieces to sell as well. Hope that helps.

There will probably be new relics with new upgrade ... when that occurs ... not sure :( Also new islands most likely will pop up with future upgrades so the map pieces will be used to unlock them ... however, since there's no telling when that will take place and the map pieces take up storage space ... I have been trading them @ Carl's cabin (island) and selling them @ Wesley's ... only keeping 7 of each (so I don't have 2 start from scratch if a new island appears 2moro;) ... hope this helps:)

It says on help section of the game that Carl's cabin will help once you have unlocked that island. If you can get your hands on a blue map!!!!=/

I'm on level 48 and am using the Relic Ruins. Once you use the bomb to open the cave on the main island that's all that does. To unlock the ruins you must click the map icon that the seagull with the hat sits. That will take you to a map of islands, you must unlock Carl's Cabin which is the farthest island on the right. Once the island is unlocked, you then must collect 4 Map Key maps, which is the blue and white maps. Collecting those will earn a Secret Passage key to unlock the Relic Ruins. Once in the ruins, use hammers, clippers and axes to find hidden puzzle pieces. The only issue I'm having is once you open everything, it doesn't provide more items to find more puzzle pieces. I'm hoping that will come, if not I'm stuck. Haha Hope this helps!!

The neighbor islands are unlocked when you clear the area above the main level (notice that table in the trees?). That will open up the other islands where you can trade and buy goods too.
